Bulle, 11km (7 miles) from Gruyères, is the site of a fine 13th-century castle (was due to reopen in February 2012 after renovation) and the Gruyères Museum, which illustrates the customs of the region.

Neuchâtel

The lakeside town of Neuchâtel u [map] has a long intellectual tradition, which lives on in its university, its schools and its specialised institutes. The town has belonged successively to the Holy Roman Empire, the dukes of Burgundy and the kings of Prussia. It was not until 1857 that Prussia officially recognised the independence of the canton, even though it had been a Confederation member since 1815. The ‘tick-tock’ of official Swiss time is emitted by the Chronometric Observatory of Neuchâtel, the research centre for the clockmaking industry.
